Symmetry ColoringLevel 2 · No. 4

8 × 8 grid. No hints. 2 puzzles per page.

Aimsvisual-spatial relations / mental flipping / eye movements and shifting attention / eye-hand coordination

Aims of this activity

  • Finding the matching square on the other side by its distance from the center line and its row (visual-spatial relations)
  • Picturing a shape flipped left to right, or top to bottom (mental flipping)
  • Looking back and forth between the example side and the side to color (eye movements and shifting attention)
  • Coloring neatly inside each square (eye-hand coordination)

Half of a picture on a square grid is already shaded in gray as the example.Your child colors the squares on the other side, as if the picture were folded along the center line, to finish the picture. For each shaded square, your child needs to see how many squares it is from the center line and which row it is in, and then find the same spot on the other side.Because it is coloring squares rather than drawing lines, it is easy to start even for children who find drawing straight lines hard. The activity aims to build the ability to judge positions and to picture a shape flipped over.

Tips

  • One or two pages at a time is plenty.
  • When your child finishes, ask, "What does it look like?" The pictures are made of squares, so children may see different things. If the answer is close, count it as right.
  • To check the coloring, compare it with the red squares on the answer page. Keep the two apart. What the picture looks like is up to your child. Which squares to color has one right answer.
  • Before starting, point to a shaded square in the top row, count from the center line ("one, two"), and point to the same spot on the other side. This makes the idea easy to see.
  • Write the time it took at the bottom of the page so you can compare next time.

If it is too hard

  • Go down one level.
  • Go row by row. Point to a shaded square first, then point to the matching square on the other side.
  • Above the grid, write 1, 2, 3 ... counting out from the center line on both sides. For pages that fold top to bottom, write the numbers down the side.
  • Stand a small mirror on the center line and color while looking at the reflection.

If it is too easy

  • Go up one level.
  • Record the time and see whether your child can finish a little faster than last time.
