Remember the Order: PicturesLevel 5 · No. 2

Remember the order of 5 pictures. A picture from the same group that was not at the top is mixed in below, and gets an × in its box.

Aimsvisual memory and sequential memory / visual discrimination / eye movements

Aims of this activity

  • Keeping the order of what you saw in mind (visual memory and sequential memory)
  • Telling the remembered pictures apart from similar ones (visual discrimination)
  • Moving the eyes from left to right in order (eye movements)

Your child remembers the order of the pictures lined up from left to right on the top half of the page, folds the page along the dotted line in the middle to hide them, and then writes in each box on the bottom half which position that picture was in.The pictures are familiar things with names, such as apples and cars. The activity aims to build the ability to keep the order of what you saw in mind.At Level 5, one picture from the same group that was not at the top is mixed in, and your child writes × in its box. There is also a version with symbols, "Remember the Order: Shapes."

Code at the bottom right: oboeru-oboejun-L5-se-n5-x1

Tips

  • Show only the top half first, and wait until your child says "Got it!" There is no need to set a time limit.
  • You can also time how long it takes to say "Got it!" and note it in the margin. It makes it easier to compare when you repeat the activity (the time to answer goes in the box at the bottom).
  • The arrow at the top shows the reading direction, from left to right. Saying "Look at them in order from the left" helps.
  • Then fold the page backward along the dotted line in the middle ("Fold here") to hide the top half, and write the numbers in the boxes on the bottom half.
  • Some children say the names of the pictures out loud in order while remembering. To focus on remembering by looking, try doing it without saying the names.
  • If writing numbers is hard, an adult can write them, or your child can point to the pictures in order.
  • One or two pages at a time is plenty.

If it is too hard

  • Go down one level.
  • Say the names of the pictures in order together while remembering.

If it is too easy

  • Go up one level.
  • Set a time limit for remembering (for example, 10 seconds).
  • Try the symbol version, "Remember the Order: Shapes."
